The final round of this year's movie releases made their mark over the Christmas break. With no new movies opening this Friday it's a good time to play catch up on many of the great films already in theaters.
The highly-anticipated big screen adaptation of "Les Misérables" lived up to the hype.
Its December 25th debut raked in $18.1 million, the second biggest Christmas Day opening behind "Sherlock Holmes." Les Mis also catapulted into all-around awards contention with astounding art direction, costumes and make up.
As for the performances, Hugh Jackman stakes a strong claim for a best actor bid, and most Oscar experts say Anne Hathaway is a lock for a best supporting actress nomination, if not the win.
Quentin Tarantino's spaghetti western homage "Django Unchained" notched an impressive $15 million opening, good enough for the third best Christmas Day ever.
Supporting roles by Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio are getting the most awards buzz although they'll be competing in the same category. As for Tarantino, "Django Unchained" could be one his most successful movies ever giving him a fighter's chance at best director and best picture consideration.
