Steel wool scrubbing pads are made up of thousands of thin strands of steel. When you light the steel on fire, you can see a self-perpetuating reaction.
Unrolling the steel wool into a single, flat layer will allow more oxygen to feed the reaction.
Finally, you can try pressing a nine-volt battery the steel wool. The energy from the battery combined with the steel will create a short-circuit spark that lights the steel pad on fire.
Kids, be sure to try this experiment at home only with the permission and supervision of an adult.
