CAMM: Camp gives students a free summer jumpstart

Incoming seventh graders like Crystal Graupmann will be the first to admit that math isn’t on top of their minds during most summer breaks.
However, things are a little different this year. She is one of more than 400 students from school districts in and around Bell County taking part in a free, three-week summer camp at Central Texas College.
"Sometimes my mind goes blank in the summer,” Graupmann said. "Here we learn fun ways to do new math, and he puts everything in rules and things that you can remember really easily."
Educator Jason Duran says the program is designed for kids from seventh grade to high school, which includes getting students ready for college.
"We have, my class in particular, we're doing sixth to seventh, and we're already introducing algebraic skills that they won't see until they are eighth-grade," Duran said. "I believe kids lose a lot of information during the summertime. Just getting the two or three week program kind of keeps their brain moving."
The program has been around for five years. Organizers say registration information is typically available around May through varying school districts.
