Dennis Franchione has held eight Head Coaching positions, two of those right here in San Marcos. It became the only repeat on his resume when he returned to take over at Texas State two years ago, and since, he says enough time has passed to make the new feel familiar again, for both him and his players.
"I think the newness has worn off, we know what to expect from each other," said Franchione.
But among the familiarity, is a lot of change. Franchione has guided the program from FCS to FBS and simultaneously through three different conferences. This season, the Bobcats are settling into the Sun Belt, all part of Coach Fran's plan for progress.
"I knew this would be a little time consuming when it started and it's nice to know that our administration and our fans are behind us and believe in the direction that we've got things going," said Franchione.
His strategy doesn't stop there.
"I want to go to a bowl game and compete for a championship, and I know a lot of people do. Exactly how close we are is hard to determine when we're going into a new league playing new faces, but I think we're getting closer," said Franchione.
This season holds a heavier significance in Fran's mind, as he sees the program really pick up speed, in terms of team potential and even more support from fans and administrators. All pieces of the puzzle he's proud to put together, as part of his what he sees as his eighth and final go at head honcho.
"I think this is it. This is my plan for my last stop, but I don't always get to make those decisions, but I'm grateful to be at Texas State at this time when so many good things are happening and we get to be a part of it," said Franchione.
