Ahead of the November municipal elections, one group is getting the word out about the new Voter ID law.
The Austin Area Urban League hosted a town hall discussion at Huston-Tillotson University Monday night.
Elected officials including Mayor Pro Tem Sheryl Cole and Representative Eddie Rodriguez attended the meeting. The group had a panel discussion about issues like affordable housing and the 10-1 redistricting plan.
The primary focus of the meeting was voting rights and the new voter identification requirements.
"We believe at the Urban League that it's a voter suppression tactic. It's unfortunate, but our goal is to educate voters so that they get the appropriate ID on time, so that they can vote,” Austin Area Urban League President Teddy McDaniel said.
The Austin Area Urban League is an organization that helps under served Austin residents.
The group has been around for more than 30 years.
