A four-year old student is expected to be okay after a woman and a firefighter found her wandering on a North Austin street.
Officers say the girl had wandered away from her pre-school at Pickle Elementary. Firefighters responding to an unrelated call in the area found the girl Thursday morning in a residential area on East St. John's Street.
Investigators say they don't know how long the girl was out on the street, but she appeared to be okay and wasn't crying when they found her.
"Being four years old, she couldn't provide much information. She did tell the officer what her name was and that was it,” Jermaine Kilgore with the Austin Police Department said. “The officer did try to find out where she was coming from, but she wasn't able to answer many questions."
Police and the Austin School District officials are still trying to figure out how the girl was able to leave the school on her own.
The district says if someone violated school policy, they will be held accountable. AISD says it is sending a letter to parents of students at Pickle to explain the incident.
