First responders killed or seriously injured in the line of duty were honored Thursday morning at 2013 Star of Texas Awards.
It was with a heavy heart families stepped on stage to accept an award from Governor Rick Perry when the name of their loved one was called.
Alison Snokhouse knows the pain involved all too well. Her husband Robert and his brother were both killed in the West fertilizer explosion earlier this year. Both were volunteer firefighters with the West Fire Department.
Snokhouse said that while the ceremony was beautiful, even awards can be a painful reminder of the loss involved.
"Events like these are hard for us. It's almost like ripping that scab back open every time we have one,” she said.
It brings back grief, but also brings with it a bit of comfort.
"It makes us realize that people haven't forgotten about our husbands, and our brother-in-laws and sons," she said. "We appreciate that they do all these things for us."
The families of seven fallen firefighters with the West Volunteer Fire Department were among those that accepted awards on Thursday.
