Local civil rights advocate, long-time teacher and equal opportunity advocate Willie Mae Kirk passed away Saturday at the age of 92.
Kirk taught Austin children for 32 years. During that time, she saw Austin's schools become integrated. Starting in the 1940's she also worked on several political campaigns and led efforts to make places like city pools accessible to everyone.
Kirk attended what would one day be Huston-Tillotson University, where she met her husband Lee Kirk.
They had four children, including former Dallas mayor and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk.
Kirk was an active member of the Travis County Democratic Party. Joe Deshotel, with the Travis County Democratic Party, joined us in the studio on Sunday to talk about her legacy.
