In Elgin, the Wildcats football team is making big waves as the area's biggest surprise of the young season, and a lot of the credit goes to two brothers.
"These coaches have been here for a while. They used to come to the middle school games and tell us that they're waiting on us to come up and turn the program around," Te'Rel Simmons, Elgin's senior quarterback, said.
Along with his brother, senior running back Da'Trean Simmons, the pair has helped the Wildcats jump out to a perfect 5-0 start, winning each game by an average of more than 39 points.
"They make us go on offense," Elgin's head coach Wade Griffin said. "Te'Rel is kind of the guy that makes everything go. We are such a zone read team, and if people are focused on stopping him, then De'Trean is going to run nuts. If they really focus on stopping the zone game with the running back, then the quarterback is going to be great."
The brothers have been playing football together ever since they can remember, and when a clutch play needs to be made in a game, the pair relies on familial instinct.
"There is a natural feel for where each other is at, and you really can't coach or teach that at all. At all," Griffin said.
On the football field in Elgin, there's a brotherly love and connection leading the undefeated Wildcats. If the great play continues, the city may soon be known more for Simmons than it is for sausage.
