As the seasons start to change in Texas, local residents say there's no better time to be out on the lake.
"This is the perfect time – not too hot not too cold,” Richard Stearns, the manager at Frank's Marina, says.
There is just one problem: The boat ramp is now locked, and there's a sign saying it’s closed until further notice.
Belton Lake and Killeen's Stillhouse Hollow Lake are run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which relies on federal funding. Both lakes have been closed as a result of the government shutdown, which Stearns says is negatively impacting the marina's business.
"Other people cannot come in the lake and buy gas from us, for instance,” Stearns says. “So we're going to lose some economy that way.”
The lake is also the site for weekend fishing tournaments, but those plans have changed as well.
"Fishing tournaments are all canceled," Stearns says. "Bass fisherman cannot get their boats in the lake, so there's no tournament."
Owners with boats at Frank's Marina can still have their boats out in the water.
Reservations at the nearby Belton Park were also canceled due to the government shutdown, and officials are offering a refund to all campers. For now, the lakes and parks will stay locked.
"Well I just hope it ends as soon as possible,” Stearns says. “It's a shame it's happening, but hopefully it will be over soon."
