For the second time in a week, the Austin Police Department has fired an officer for failing to follow procedure.
Officer Blayne Williams was fired after failing to report and collect a hidden cell phone as evidence.
According to a disciplinary memo, Williams was working an off-duty hotel security job when he was called to a hotel room to investigate an alarm.
In the bathroom, Williams found a cell phone in hidden behind a ceiling tile above the shower. He powered it up and saw the face of a small asian child before the phone powered off.
According to the memo, Williams filed an internal report with the hotel and left the phone with hotel security, but did not notify the Austin Police Department.
Williams told hotel security that the phone may contain improper photography, but told APD investigators that he didn’t think a crime had taken place. He admitted to the investigators that he would have looked into the matter further if he was on duty.
The disciplinary memo states Williams provided contradicting and inconsistent statements throughout APD’s investigation.
