A Killeen church community is mourning the death of three senior pastors.
Pastors Terry and Jan Whitely and Steve Timmerman died in a Thursday night car wreck on State Highway 130 near Pflugerville. Witnesses told police their vehicle rolled over after a tire blew out near Gattis School Road.
Church members in Killeen gathered at the Grace Christian Center Friday to mourn their deaths.
"I feel like I'm in a dream and I haven't woken up,” church member Elsa Mathis said. “And if I wake up this isn't happening--that they'll be right there smiling."
Steve Timmerman also served as a volunteer for the Killeen Fire Department. Members of his church say his and the Whitley’s memory will live on through the Grace Christian Center.
"We're such a good church, a caring church, a giving church because of the example they set for us," pastor Erik Reynolds said.
Many who go to the church say it - and the people there - changed their lives.
"It's still a shock to be quite honest. I don't know how to react to it," church member Alex Zap said. "These pastors always made sure to make you understand, I'm not above you. I'm level with you, if anything, I'm below you because I'm serving you."
The City of Killeen lowered flags to half-staff today to honor Pastor Steve Timmerman and Pastors Terry and Jan Whitley.
Flags will remain at half-staff until the day following their funerals.
The Grace Christian Center will have a nighttime vigil Thursday night from 7 to 9 p.m. Church officials say they are still planning for a future memorial for the pastors.
