Austin is a pretty peaceful city, but it wasn't always that way. In fact, our beloved town is home to the nation's first serial killer.
YNN’s Jess Mitchell joined Monica Ballard of Austin Ghost Tours to learn more about some hauntings downtown, and the pair discovered a couple of creepy sites.
After stopping by Shoal Creek, which used to be a burial ground, the two found more hauntings in a parking lot. Near the Whole Foods on West Fifth Street, the lot was the scene of the first of nine gruesome murders in the late 1800s--making Austin America's first home to a serial killer.
That fact was well hidden though, according to Ballard. She said the Victorian people considered the crimes to be so horrendous that they systematically scrubbed it from the city's history. The crime was only rediscovered many years later through trial transcripts.
