Austin’s Mayor Lee Leffingwell has declared a “Local State of Disaster” in response to last week’s devastating flooding.
In addition to the declaration, Leffingwell sent a letter to Governor Rick Perry which describes the damage done by last week’s storm and says there is a “critical need” for federal and state support.
City Council will vote to ratify the declaration on Thursday. The mayor has asked that council members finish that meeting by noon to ensure resources are focused on flood recovery. To achieve that, a city spokesperson warns that some non-essential council items could be postponed to a later date.
At its Thursday meeting, City Council will consider an ordinance which would waive permitting and development fees for homes damaged by flooding.
