Jesús Garza learned at an early age that success isn’t all about you – it’s about your service to the community.
Those wise words were passed down Garza from his parents. They moved to the U.S. from Mexico before he was born.
Garza learned at a young age society wasn't always equal. His father fought in World War II. With just two years of college education on his resume, it wasn’t enough to move up the career ladder.
"Even though as bright as he was and committed to service, his career was limited,” Garza said. “You could surmise that some of that career limitation was a result of his heritage."
Garza said his parents understood the path to success required a good education. They immersed their children in books and learning.
It paved the path that took Garza to the top of the Seton Healthcare Family. As president and CEO, he oversees everything from the region's level-one trauma center to community clinics spanning 11 Central Texas counties.
Those lifelong principles are still in play.
“You are in the position to facilitate and make things work,” Garza said. “Things have got to work. Principally, the reason they have to work is you serve people."
Garza joined Seton in 2002 after serving as Austin City Manager for eight years. In both roles, Garza knew to be practical, compassionate and always grateful for the work of others.
"Let your work speak for itself; you don't want to call attention to yourself," Garza said.
Now Garza imparts his own words of wisdom--recognize your impact on others--as he recognizes the impact of his own heritage on every decision he makes.
Garza earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Texas. All of his siblings have advanced degrees as well. He said it's a testament to his parent's push to use education to rise through the ranks.
