Bryce Petty is good at his job.
"This man is unbelievable. This man can do it all: run, throw – probably could do hopscotch if you asked him to," Bears running back Lache Seastrunk said. "He's just – he's that good."
Bears Head Coach Art Briles has a track record of recruiting quarterbacks of Petty's caliber – not just the talented type, but the mature, intelligent and focused type. The coach says those are the qualities he recruits for and the ones he's seen in Petty display in almost every game of the quarterback's first starting season.
"He's good, and what makes him good is that he's very calm, and he's a very confident kid in a very humble way, which is what I really appreciate," Briles said.
One game in particular stands out to Briles: the Kansas State game, which was fourth-year junior's first on the road. Briles says it was the Bears' first game where they actually had to work the clock.
"I'm out there trying to get his attention and he runs over to me and I just kind of point to the clock and he says, 'Coach, I'm going to break them at 10. We'll snap at two.' I said, 'You got it,'" Briles said. "I tuned around and thought, 'That's pretty good.'"
In the Bears' first six games, Petty has had more composure and success on the field than many first-year starters accomplish by the end of the season. As of Baylor's win over Iowa State, the quarterback had thrown for 2,023 yards and 15 touchdowns, averaging right around 340 yards per game.
"It's my turn to just go out and play and have fun," Petty said.
Granted, he has been waiting three years for this. Both he and his coach know his success is due to his hard work and, most importantly, his patience.
"The thing that's impressed me about Bryce is that he's waited his turn, and he's done it the right way by improving when he's not playing – mentally and physically," Briles said.
The Bears tacked on yet another victory over Kansas this weekend, to go 7-0 for the first time since 1980. Petty still has one year of eligibility left, so the Bears are likely to see even more success in the future.
