The NCAA Volleyball Tournament began Thursday, with four Texas teams facing off in Austin at Gregory Gym. The Longhorns, a top-seed in the tournament, are hosting the first and second rounds on their home court and were able to finish off their first game with expected ease.
The Longhorns' first opponent, was neighbor Texas State. The Bobcats went to the Sun Belt tournament as the number three seed. They rattled off 3 straight wins, and earned the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament, but unfortunately for the Cats, that meant they faced first place Texas in the first round, and were swept by the Horns. Texas plays Texas A&M in the second round Friday at 7 p.m. also at Gregory Gym.
Meanwhile the football team is hoping to hold on to the idea of a Big 12 Championship, and they'll have to do that in Waco. The odds are growing against the Longhorns, as the spread expands past its original 10 point mark in favor of the Bears. Some sites even have the Horns as 15-point underdogs in the Bears' last game at Floyd Casey.
Meanwhile high school teams are taking their chances in the fourth round of the playoffs. Only three Austin-area teams remain in the hunt. The Lake Travis Cavaliers face A&M Consolidated on Saturday. The Rouse Raiders are taking on San Antonio Brennan at Comalander Stadium on Friday, and the smallest of those still fighting is Thorndale. The Bulldogs head to the Quarterfinals for the first time since 2006, and if they're able to beat Shiner at Shelton Stadium on Friday, it will be the first time they make it to round five in almost two decades.
Lauren Mickler caught up with the Bulldogs head coach Brent Brevard about what this win would mean to them, while Joaquin Sanchez touches base with Haley Eckerman about her team's journey through the NCAA tournament, all that and more on Thursday's episode of Your Sports Now.
