The Boy Scouts of America's National Council has voted to ease a long-standing ban and allow openly gay boys to be accepted as scouts. Of the local Scout leaders voting at their annual meeting in Texas, more than 60 percent supported the proposal.

The so-called campus carry bill is among legislation nearing expiration at the State Capitol and the bill is as good as dead, according to Democratic lawmakers. The bill would have required colleges across the the state to allow CHL-certified students to carry firearms on campus.

Austin City Council approved an additional $7 million for the demolition of the Holly Street Power Plant, a decomissioned plant which has gone unused since 1974. Council members also finalized plans for Austin's new Central Library and delayed a vote to define what "ridesharing" really means.

Webb Middle School was placed on lockdown as a precaution Thursday morning as police searched for a man and a woman who attempted to cash a stolen check, an Austin Police Department spokesperson said. The lockdown has been lifted, but one suspect is still on the loose.

On Wednesday, Austin's city auditor randomly drew the names of eight people to serve on the Citizens Redistricting Commission. Those eight will select six more people to complete the team of 14 which will draw city council district lines which maximize minority voter representation.

Austin City Council scrapped plans to create an independent board to oversee the operations of Austin Energy Tuesday. The move followed weeks of amendments to the original plan, first introduced by Mayor Lee Leffingwell in February.
