Ridgelea drainage project to begin soon

Since the deadly Memorial Day floods killed 13 in Austin 32 years ago, the city has spent about $200 million dollars improving drainage along Shoal Creek. Decades later, some of the work to prevent another tragedy is still underway. Drought increases dangers for Memorial Day boaters

Memorial Day weekend is the kick off to the summer and one of the busiest lake days in Central Texas, but the ongoing drought has closed all the public boat ramps on Lakes Travis and drastically changed the lay of the lake. Local law enforcement still expects boats to fill the water and will be on watch to keep them safe.

It’s a wet start to the Memorial Day weekend—there’s a flash flood warning effect until 6:30 p.m. for western Caldwell, Hays and Travis counties. There will be a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, dropping to a 30 percent chance of mainly light rain overnight.

The victim of an attack in San Marcos late last month has died, according to a spokesperson with the Hays County Sheriff's Office. Authorities in San Marcos may upgrade existing charges against the man they suspect robbed her to murder.

Griffin’s father files suit against Nestande, Clive Bar

Austin

The father of 30-year-old Courtney Griffin, who was fatally struck by a BMW driven by Gabrielle Nestande in May 2011, filed a lawsuit late Thursday against both Nestande and Clive Bar on Rainey Street, where the former legislative aide was drinking before she got behind the wheel. Courtney’s mother, Laurie Griffin, filed a lawsuit seeking $1 million from Nestande and Clive Bar in March. Nestande, a California native, is currently serving 180 days in jail as part of her 10-year probated sentence for criminally negligent homicide.

'Slacker' director appealing suit over film archive lost in Bastrop wildfire

Richard Linklater, Austin director behind the cult classic “Slacker,” is appealing a lawsuit he lost against his insurance company regarding property damage he suffered in the 2011 Bastrop wildfires. Linklater says he lost his film company’s entire archive in the mega blaze. The appeal comes at the same time his latest film, “Before Midnight,” debuts.

Council Wrap: New subcommittee for Austin Energy, preliminary approval for accessibility requirements

Austin City Council gave preliminary approval to an ordinance Thursday which would require new homes to be built with certain features to make them more accessible to people in wheelchairs. Council also voted to create a subcommittee to oversee aspects of Austin Energy.
