TSCO IDs suspect, deputy in Sunday shooting
Officials with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office have identified the man shot and killed during a standoff Sunday afternoon, as well as the sheriff's deputy who shot him.
TCSO issued a statement Monday afternoon saying 31-year-old Joshua Samuelson of Dale, Texas was shot and killed by Deputy Carlos Rodriguez after Samuelson pointed a gun at officers.
Deputies were called to the 11000 block of Farm to Market 812, just west of Highway 130, around noon Sunday, where Samuelson had barricaded himself in a home. Sheriff's spokesman Roger Wade said Samuelson’s family had become concerned for his well-being after receiving messages from him earlier in the day.
During discussions with police and the ensuing SWAT standoff, Samuelson left the home several times, each time armed, to talk with negotiators. Around 3:00 p.m., he left the home again, and pointed his weapon at deputies more than once. That was when Deputy Rodriguez fatally shot Samuelson.
Rodriguez has been with the sheriff’s office for more than 20 years and has been a member of the SWAT team for eight years. TCSO officials say he will be assigned to administrative duties until the investigation into the incident is complete.
