Bastrop residents were treated to a "Tree-for-all" event Saturday.

The City of Bastrop distributed 2,000 native trees to members of the community affected by the September wildfires. Houston-based Apache Foundation paid for the trees, which were grown by area nurseries.

Cars lined up for more than a mile to take part in the tree giveaway.

"These trees have to get planted, and they have to grow, and they have to get nutured. With the future forecast for a continued drought, it's going to be challenging, but we hope that folks can take these trees home and get them in the ground while it's cool out,” University of Texas Urban Forester Jim Carse said. “Now is a great time to plant trees."

About 1,500,000 trees were killed in the Bastrop County Complex fire. The massive wildfire also destroyed about 34,000 acres and 1,600 homes.
