Heavy traffic expected for holiday weekend

Heavy traffic expected for holiday weekend
If you're heading out of town this weekend, look out for heavy traffic on the highways.

Labor Day is traditionally the last weekend of summer travel and experts say it's going to be a busy one in Texas.

Officials with AAA Texas say they anticipate as many as 2.4 million Texans will hit the road this Labor Day weekend. That's up more than four percent over last year, despite a recent increase in gas prices.

In anticipation of a busy travel weekend, TxDOT officials say they will stop all major projects and construction workers will be off through Monday

Both state and local law enforcement agencies say they'll have extra officers on the streets as well.

"All available troopers are going to be out this holiday weekend enforcing all the traffic laws,” Texas State Trooper Robbie Barrera said. “Speeding, not wearing your seat belt and, of course, driving while intoxicated.".

AAA Texas representatives say the statewide average for regular unleaded gasoline is $3.64 a gallon, up about nine cents in the last week, but that's still about 20 cents below the national average.
