Just a few months ago, 66-year-old Mike Henderson was in so much pain he couldn’t walk.

“It’s like you just stand up and it’s a burning pain up and down your leg,” he said.

Mike's no stranger to back pain -- he has had his share as an Austin firefighter years ago. This time, a tumor fractured his vertebrae, and he underwent surgery despite having some misconceptions about going under the knife.

"This wasn't anything like I thought it was going to be," he said.

Which is why he wants to share his story now. Mike is part of a new support group called the Better Way Back Program. It connects back pain sufferers with those who've already gone through it.

“Up until now people really haven’t had a resource to turn to find answers with people who’ve experienced this before,” he said.

Patients connect through phone calls and e-mails, and get their questions answered from people like Mike. The program is new to Central Texas and helps ease fears when it comes to treatment.

Mike says what happened to him was a quick recovery and a desire to help other patients.

“Keep that positive attitude,” he said. “Keep a smile on your face, know it’s going to get better.”
