One step at a time, Central Texans hit the pavement Sunday to promote literacy among disadvantaged families.

The Austin Learning Academy was the driving force behind the Literacy and Health Walk in East Austin. Organizers say one of their top priorities is bringing awareness to early childhood literacy.

They say it's something that can't be accomplished unless it involves the whole family.

"It’s a pretty unique model because we have mulit-generational learning,” Belinda Rojas with the Austin Learning Academy said. “As the children are coming to our pre-school early readiness and school readiness, the parents are in their own classes. It's all centered around the premise that a child's educational attainment later on in life is key and tied to the mom's educational attainment."

Sunday’s event was not only geared toward raising awareness about literacy.

Academy officials say they're hoping to raise $100,000 dollars to help fill a budget shortfall.
