In an effort to promote the work done by the nonprofit CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, Austin city leaders embraced their superhero alter egos Monday.

Mayor Lee Leffingwell declared Sept. 30, 2012 as CASA Superhero Day. Leffingwell said city leaders want to send a message that super heroes were not raised in a typical family, but all grew up to be extraordinary.

"As the proclamation said, every kid needs a hero, but abused children need a superhero. That's the point we're trying to make here," Leffingwell said.

CASA volunteers act as advocates for children in the foster care system.

A CASA Superhero Run will be held Sept. 30. The run will raise money and awareness. The 5K race starts at 8 a.m. at the Mueller Lake Park and Hangar.
