Some young parents struggling to live independently received some major help Friday.

The nonprofit group LifeWorks, along with eight corporations, helped furnish eight rent-free apartments for the young adults. It's an effort known as the Home Improvement Challenge.

More than 250 volunteers showed up early Friday morning to add furniture and some pizzazz to the apartments.

A LifeWorks spokesperson said some of the young adults this program helps had never had a real home before.

"A lot of people take for granted just coming home,” LifeWorks Development Director Brett Barnes said. “To come home and have a nice couch, to have a place that you feel pride in, and that you can have someone come over and you're not embarrassed, it really has an impact on a client's self-esteem and really can transition them to a place of great success."

LifeWorks says the young adults that received apartments are either going to school or getting jobs.

Volunteers say the Home Improvement Challenge lets them show the youth that someone does care.
