Brian Mahy, 26
Austin police have identified the
cyclist killed on the Ann Richards Bridge over the weekend, as well as the driver who struck him.
Officers say 30-year-old Robert Anthony Ramiez was riding a bicycle home from work shortly after 4:30 a.m. Sunday when he was struck by a black Ford Mustang in the far right hand lane of the bridge, located at 100 South Congress Avenue.
The driver of the Mustang, 26-year-old Brian Anthony Mahy, was traveling at a “high rate of speed” in the center lane on the southbound side of South Congress Avenue when he passed a vehicle on the right and crashed into Ramirez, police say.
Mahy originally fled the scene, but later turned himself into police. He is charged with intoxication manslaughter, a second-degree felony and failure to stop and render aid, a third-degree felony.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Austin Police Department’s Homicide Unit at (512) 974-4779.
Ramirez’ death is Austin’s 53rd traffic fatality of 2012. Last year at this time, there were 41 traffic fatalities.
