Two thousand local superheroes and families joined forces at Mueller Park Sunday morning for the CASA Superhero Run.

Runners competed in a 5K race while more than 400 kids followed superhero puppets in their very own 1K.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) helps raise money and awareness in support of children who’ve been abused or neglected. Organizers say they hope the event encourages people to learn more about their cause.

"We have 2,300 kids between the two counties and right now we are only able to serve about 1,500 of them,” Alisa De Luna said. “We want to be able to recruit enough volunteers to serve the rest of the 800 children that need a volunteer.

A costume contest for the best original and traditional superhero was also held.

Both CASAs of Williamson and Travis counties sponsored the event.

Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell named September 30th CASA superhero day.
