Police are investigating an auto pedestrian fatal accident in Southeast Austin.
The accident happened around 4 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 71 near the airport.
Austin police say a man was crossing the street when he was hit. Officials say they’re not sure if he was in a crosswalk or not but are looking into skid marks on the road.
The driver did stop and try to help, but the man died at the scene.
Highway 71 was closed for more than two hours, as police investigated, and traffic was backed up several miles.
This is the 55th fatal accident this year.
