Minimum purchase comes to Downtown parking meters
Drivers using city parking meters in Downtown Austin will face a one-dollar minimum charge when paying with a credit card beginning Nov. 1.

According to a statement from city spokesperson Leah Fillion, drivers using coins may still purchase 15 minute blocks of time at a cost of $.25.

Fillion said that about 250,000 credit and debit card transactions are made each month at city parking meter terminals, resulting in nearly $25,000 in internal costs per month and nearly $300,000 per year.

The city spokesperson reminds drivers that the same parking receipt can be used at any public parking spot as long as time remains, so drivers can travel to different parking spaces during the time that receipt is valid.

The new parking meters were installed in the summer of 2009. City officials said the manual, change-only machines were costing the city $500,000 a year.
