Investigators say a pilot has died in the crash of his small plane into a Central Texas field.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the accident was reported around dawn Thursday in rural Caldwell County.

DPS Trooper Robbie Barrera says the single-engine plane had taken off from nearby San Marcos Municipal Airport and was attempting to return when the crash happened.

A spokesperson with the South Hays Fire Department said the initial call came from a Union-Pacific train conductor who saw a fire near the tracks. The tracks were shut down for a short period of time.

First responders reported there was not much left of the plane and that debris was scattered for about 30 years in any direction.

Authorities are trying to determine what caused the crash on land operated by the federal Gary Job Corps Center. Classes at the Gary Job Corps Center were not affected.

Trooper Barrera said the area had fog Thursday morning and weather has not been ruled out.

The pilot was alone on the plane. His name hasn't been released but Barrera says he was from North Dakota.
