Forever families became a reality for 28 foster children Thursday.
The “Austin Adoption Day” celebration at the Gardner-Betts Juvenile Justice Center in South Austin made the 28 adoptions final.
The celebration included visits from Wizard of Oz characters and gifts, but the greatest gift was finally getting a home they can call their own forever.
Jacob and Manijeh Huereca say they've always wanted to adopt, and today that dream came true. On Thursday, they officially welcomed 17-year-old Eric to their family and say even if you don't have the desire to adopt, there's still something you can do to help.
"Some people might have that pulling at the heart strings to adopt, be a foster parent, but I think for everybody, there's something that can be done for these kids, whether it's volunteering, mentoring, donating money, just getting involved,” Jacob said. “Cause there's a lot of children in the foster care system but there's a lot we can do for them."
