Diabetes patients now have an extra tool of protection and its right on their phones.
Matt Johnson was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes six years ago. He now has a collection of meters that check his blood sugar, but none like the new IBG Star.
“It’s much easier to carry around,” Johnson said. “And the functionality of it with the phone is pretty cool.”
The IBG Star fits right onto the end of Johnson’s iPhone. The patient pricks their finger and the tiny meter takes a reading.
“I’ll just plug it in,” Johnson said. “It’ll take two seconds to download.”
The meter plugs into the bottom and the phone does the rest.
“It just really adds a nice new dimension to taking care of your diabetes,” endocrinologist Dr. Mrinalini Kulkarni-Date said.
The device also works with the iPod touch.
It doesn't replace other glucose meters, but it does keep diabetes in check—even with one limitation.
“It’s an improvement over what I had, but I wish they had a cure for it,” Johnson said.
