One person is dead and another was sent to the hospital after an early morning accident Thursday on Interstate-35.

It happened around 4:45 a.m. on I-35 near Onion Creek. The interstate was closed for several hours while authorities investigated.

Officials say the male passenger died on scene, and the female driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say everyone needs to think about staying safe on the roads.

"The police department needs to work together with the public to change the driving culture in the city of Austin,” Veneza Bremner with the Austin Police Department said. “We are having way too many tragedies occur because people make choices while they are driving that cause injury or death to many people."

This is the third fatal accident already this year in Austin.
