Roll out the red carpets because award season is upon us.
Even though most of the action is now taking place in Hollywood, Austin has some hometown contenders in the race.
Before the Oscars are handed out, the critics have their say. Thursday evening is the Critics Choice Movie Awards. Historically, it's one of the most accurate forecasters of how the Academy Awards will play out.
In the past two years, a Central Texas-made movie has been in the mix for Best Picture. In 2010, it was “True Grit,” and in 2011, “The Tree of Life” received a nod.
This year, Central Texas doesn’t have a contender for Best Picture, but the Lone Star State is still making a splash in several categories.
Richard Linklater’s dark comedy “Bernie,” which was shot in the Bastrop area, is nominated for Best Comedy. Starring actor Jack Black and actress Shirley MacLaine also received a nod for their performances in the film.
Also, local Matthew McConaughey received a surprising nomination for his role in “Magic Mike,” and is gaining plenty of award buzz himself.
