On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, work will begin on a monument in San Marcos dedicated to the fruitful relationship between the legendary civil rights leader and President Lyndon Baines Johnson.

The monument at the intersection of Martin Luther King and LBJ drives has been on the city’s to-do list for more than a decade, but on Monday the project will become a reality.

"On one level, it's unbelievable because of the number of years of people working for it, trying to keep it in the public mind here in San Marcos," Ed Mihalkanin with the LBJ Museum of San Marcos said.

The crossroads monument is based on a photo of the two leaders talking in the White House. The image will be re-created in shadow.

"I hope it will cause them to think about the contribution that these two leaders made to our country," Mihalkanin said.

The San Marcos Martin Luther King Day commemoration begins at the Hays County Courthouse at 10 a.m. There will be a march down LBJ Drive to Martin Luther King Drive where the ground-breaking will take place.
