Sony’s announcement of its new PlayStation 4 video game console Wednesday night served as the public’s first introduction to the next generation of home gaming, and here in Austin, game developers are still taking in what they heard.

At the local development firm Certain Affinity, employees are putting on extra pots of coffee for the work ahead.

"It's tremendously exciting because we've been working on the same amount of tech for the past 10 years,” Mike McCarthy with Certain Affinity said.

As both a professional and a fan, McCarthy welcomes the new home video game console.

"The games are going to be a lot easier to develop, so I think there's going to be a lot more independent game development,” he said.

Which means people will take more risks, but overall reaction to the new system is mixed.

"They didn't do anything particular revolutionary that we can identify at this time,” Jen Bullard with the International Game Developers Association said. “It just seems to be lukewarm reception at this point."

Sony announced Wednesday that players will be able to upload content to the Internet from their controller and it will have social networking capabilities.

Bullard says of the more than 100 developers in Austin, only one in four will actually develop for the new console.

Game developers aren't the only Austin companies getting in on the PS4 action. Austin tech giant AMD will be producing major components for the console.
