Police announced late Friday that the man killed outside his North Austin home was 70-year-old John Schaefer, and the officer who shot him was Jonathan Whitted.
Whitted shot and killed Schaefer in after Schaefer aimed his pistol at him, Police Chief Art Acevedo said during a press conference.
It began, Acevedo said, when Schaefer called 911 around 7:30 a.m. and told police he had shot and killed a pit bull that attacked him in his backyard in the 10000 block of Lanshire Drive, near the intersection of Kramer Lane and Metric Boulevard.
Both dispatchers and Officer Whitted asked Schaefer to meet them outside and to leave his firearm inside the house. Schaefer did meet officers outside, but still had the pistol in his waistband, according to the police chief.
After Schaefer refused to disarm, Whitted attempted to take the weapon. He was unable, and Schaefer pulled the gun and aimed at Whitted, according to Acevedo.
Whitted, who has been with the department since 2009, fired an undisclosed number of shots at Schaefer at close range, killing him. He was pronounced dead at 7:44 a.m.
"The officers who were responding requested dispatch to advise the complainant to please go back in the house and leave the firearm inside the house," Chief Acevedo said. "The subject refused to give up his firearm.”
Neighbors said the dog was frequently on the loose and was known as a nuisance throughout the neighborhood.
"Me and my girlfriend, we’ve seen the dog,” neighbor James Wright said. “The dog was too big and so I called animal control."
The chief said Officer Whitted is “torn up" by the incident. He has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting, as is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
