A 24-hour fund drive close to tripled its $1 million goal to raise money for Austin-area nonprofits.

Service organization ‘I Live Here, I Give Here’ is behind the day of giving, which brought in about $2.8 million in donations.

"We are a young town, we are a wired town and we are a caring town, and with those three things, that creates a successful giving day," Amplify Austin organizer Karen Frost said.

“It is helping people get into a habit of giving and making them realize that giving is fun,” she said.

It was especially fun for Christia Hoffman, a donor who was chosen at random to be personally thanked for giving with an acoustic guitar serenade by local musicians.

"This is something that is particularly special," Hoffman said.

"With funding being cut from various programs both at a city level and a state level it is increasingly important that individuals give," she said about why she donated.

In its first year, the Amplify Austin campaign made it easy to donate online while offering matching funds at certain milestones.

Originally the goal was to raise $1 million , but when the clock ran out Tuesday night, a combination of corporate and private donations added up to more than double.

Hospice Austin topped the leader board with the most at more than $112,000.

“We take care of everyone, regardless of their ability to pay or how expensive their care is,” Grace Washington from Hospice Austin said.

Washington said while she appreciates the support, she is not surprised to see the outpouring of donations for end of life care.

"After a lengthy illness and you are just weighed down with medical bills and to come in and be seen by a hospice nurse, no questions asked, and to be admitted the same day -- it's incredible," Washington said.

The funds raised during Amplify Austin will be distributed to the community organizations within the next two weeks.
