Last week was a special homecoming for rookie NFL star Robert Griffin III, commonly known as RG3.

In celebration of his football achievements on the national level, city leaders in Copperas Cove, Griffin’s hometown, renamed a road in honor of the athlete.

"What more fitting than to name a street after a man of an Army family,” Col. Matt Elledge, Fort Hood Garrison Commander, said.
“Whose tenacity and motivation made him the great man that he has become today."

The Griffins settled in Copperas Cove in 1997. Griffin became a track and football star during his time at Copperas Cove High School.

"You know go to elementary school, intermediate school, junior high, high school, and do all those things,” Griffin said. “This city truly did shape me to who I am today."

While attending high school, Griffin led the Copperas Cove Bulldogs to the state finals in 2007.

Rainy weather at the dedication ceremony brought back memories of Griffin's high school football days.

"We weathered a lot of games in the storms, and this just felt like one of those times when we were out here rooting on our team to victory," Jacqueline Griffin, the football star’s mother, said.

Robert Griffin III Boulevard runs through 140 acres of land recently purchased by Copperas Cove. City officials say this land will be developed into retail stores in the near future.
