It's not everyday you get to see English ska legends The Specials play behind a barbecue joint. Or have Erykah Badu sit in as a surprise guest at house party.

But this is South by Southwest. Anything can happen, and when it does, Michael Scherotter whips out this notebook to sketch the moment.

"When you draw, you soak it in. It takes more time than a fraction of a second for a cell phone picture and it turns on a pneumonic recording for your mind," he said.

The artist and Microsoft Technical Evangelist says his drawings make his memories more vivid.

"I sketch people, travels and then today, Pirates Canoe from Japan,” Scherotter said.

Pirates Canone is a Kyoto-based bluegrass band that made a splash at Friday's Japan night – another place where you can expect the unexpected.

Never knowing what you'll discover, or where you'll discover it, is a main theme at the underground offshoot South by South “Wendy's.”

"Clarification, it's actually south fry south Wendy's. We received a few cease and desist emails," said Neil Fridd of The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt.

What ever it's called, The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt's square hamburger themed show is a celebration of South by surprises.

A perfect fit for a weekend where the unexpected is everywhere.
