Austin police Chief Art Acevedo told Washington D.C. lawmakers on Friday he supports universal background checks for people who want to purchase firearms.
"A universal background check is a first and essential step toward comprehensive reform to our firearms and gun laws,” he said while testifying before lawmakers. “Without this essential element, there can be no lasting impact on gun violence."
Right now, all licensed dealers must submit potential buyers to a background check, but the law doesn’t apply to private sellers and person-to-person transactions at gun shows.
