Del Valle students showed off their healthy eating knowledge in a cooking competition Thursday evening.

Nineteen pint-sized chefs competed in Del Valle ISD’s Healthy Salad Challenge. The event was part of a national program to get kids thinking about eating healthy and using creativity in the kitchen.

The students were graded not only on taste, but on presentation, originality and kid-friendliness.

“Each year is fantastic. The level of competition in these students is phenomenal,” Donovon Depriest with Del Valle ISD said. “Not only do they want to win, they also want pride in what they're doing.”

National food service provider Sodexo sponsors the yearly competition. Local winners go on to the regional finals.
