The legend of Leatherface lives on in new year's first major release, "Texas Chainsaw 3D," which is meant to be the first direct sequel to 1974's "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre."

Sneak peeks start at 10 p.m. Thursday , while Tobe Hooper presents a double feature as part of the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar's closing night festivities.

Meanwhile, award-seeking dramas starring Matt Damon, Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts expand to theaters everywhere and a couple of indie specials return from last fall's Austin Film Festival.

Here's what rolls into local theaters this weekend:

Wide:

"The Impossible" (PG-13)

"Promised Land" (PG-13)

"Texas Chainsaw 3D" (R)

Limited:

"Allegiance" (R)

"Not Fade Away" (R)
